Skyfall is not the first ride at the Oktoberfest which was called “free-fall tower”, but it's the first one to actually offer a free fall.

Michael Goetzke introduced the first drop tower to the Oktoberfest in 1997. Although that tower was called “Free Fall”, the ride was more about being shot into the air, than actually falling. Sky Fall works completely differently: The gondola and the lift are separated units. After the lift pulled the gondola up to a height of 75 meters, it disconnects from the lift and freely falls down about half the way, until it reaches the magnetic breaks.

In 2016 the tower received a revamped gondola. As it is now able to spin, riders benefit from an even better view over Munich.
